What is Allergy-Free Hair Color?

​PPD and PTD are two chemicals found in other hair color products that are most likely to cause allergic reactions. PPD (p-Phenylenediamine) and PTD (4-toluenediamine) are organic compounds that are used in most hair dyes. Though organic, they can be irritating for many people, and reactions range from some mild itching and irritation to serious reactions that can mean a trip to the hospital.

Not everyone has a reaction to PPD or PTD, but those who do can experience itching, burning, redness, blisters, or even an all-over rash with a feeling of being ill. This varies for each person, so everyone who does have a reaction will experience these compounds differently.

Regular hair dyes that do contain PPD or PTD are regulated to restrict the amount of these compounds. However, if you’ve ever had a reaction to them, you may be at risk for a more serious reaction in the future, so it is best to avoid them completely.
